Anouk Aimée, the 'sphinx of French cinema', dies aged 94

The French actress, who starred in some of the most iconic films of the 1960s, has died at the age of 94.

Aimée was best known for her roles in Claude Lelouch's A Man and a Woman (1966), Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960), and Jacques Demy's Lola (1961).

She was a muse to some of the most influential directors of her time, and her enigmatic beauty and sensual presence made her an international sex symbol.

Aimée was born Françoise Dreyfus in Paris in 1932. She began her acting career in the early 1950s, and quickly became one of the most popular leading ladies in French cinema.

She starred in a number of classic films, including Roger Vadim's And God Created Woman (1956), Jacques Becker's Les Amants (1958), and Vittorio De Sica's Two Women (1960).

Aimée's international breakthrough came with her role in A Man and a Woman, which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1966.

The film tells the story of a widower and a widow who meet and fall in love, and Aimée's performance is both heartbreaking and sensual.

Aimée continued to act throughout her career, and she appeared in a number of films in the 1970s and 1980s.

In recent years, she had been less active, but she remained a beloved figure in French cinema.

Aimée died in Paris on 30 October 2023, at the age of 94.
